Digital rectal examination (DRE)
A gloved finger is inserted into the rectum to feel the condition of the prostate that lies close to the rectal wall. The test is used to help estimate size of the prostate but also consistency. If an irregularity such as a lump is felt, further tests will be necessary to enable a more accurate diagnosis.
The procedure is mildly uncomfortable, takes less than a minute to perform and has no long lasting effects. After the test, you may continue your normal activities.
